Melissa always knew that she could become more than "just a secretary!" All of her life she has enjoyed being artsy - drawing, creating, painting, etc. As she "matured" she realized a love for good wine too. So, during a visit to her hometown in New Orleans, she found Painting with a Twist where painting & wine were a match made in Heaven! She purchased her first franchise before she took the first class! The rest is history! Interesting Fun Fact: Melissa parachuted out of a perfectly good airplane - once!!
A family that paints together - stays together!
During a visit to her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana, Melissa Sutherland found out about a very unique art business called Painting with a Twist. At that time, very few people had heard about the newest “paint & sip” craze that was about to become the “new night out!” Her story tells that she bought a franchise even before she took the first class!
Since 2009, over 300 franchises have opened across the nation and Melissa is proud to own two of them right here in our Alamo city. In fact, her newly remodeled studio in Artisans Alley on Bitters Road was the original location in the San Antonio area. Soon business was booming, so she decided to open a second location in the HEB-Alon Town Centre to handle the demand.
Melissa feels especially blessed to have had her son, Sean Smiley working right at her side since opening the studio doors seven years ago. As a young teenager, he was her original studio assistant helping with every task from setting up classes to coming up with the best idea for serving paint with restaurant squeeze bottles! Now in his college years, he can be found instructing painting classes as well as on the road at vendor shows and offsite events.
Recently relocated to San Antonio from New Orleans, daughter Katie Taylor quickly blossomed as a new PWAT artist and studio manager of the HEB-Alon location across from the JCC on NWMilitary at Wurzbach. Give Katie five minutes to tell you about the business and she’ll have you signed up for your best date night ever!
If you can’t draw a straight line with a ruler or even a stick man - we’ve got you covered. Any talent level can do it - we’ll show you how! We don’t paint by numbers, but our talented artists will give you step-by-step instructions to lead you through a couple hours of painting & partying. By the end of the class, you’ll take home your very own unique masterpiece. All art materials are provided. The twist is BYOB!! And yes, you can bring your own “refreshments” of any kind - we don’t judge.
Although most classes are “adults only,” we do offer “all ages” and “family classes.” Give us a call soon to make plans for something new for your next date night, birthday party, team builder, girls night out - or you name it!
