Our Dayton, OH Painting with a Twist Artists
Jamie Aubin is a native to Dayton Ohio. Growing up in Ohio where there are so many out door venues for activities, Jamie cultivated a love of nature and adventure. She joined Girl Scouts and earned her silver and gold award while showing artwork in the mayors show and scholastics. After graduating with her BFA from Wright State University she decided to get a new perspective and have some adventure by working in national parks. Since being back in Dayton she is a proud art educator and facilitator at SPARK Art Studio in Kettering and now has become a part of the Painting with a twist family!
In hindsight Maiya's artist identity seemed inevitable; her mother is an artist and her hometown strongly encouraged creativity and individuality. Before Maiya became part of an artist community and identified as such, she found herself in a community of people passionate about challenging systematic injustices relating to the politics of identity. Her experience with activism and social justice became a catalyst and perspective to work, live, and create behind. Mayia hopes to resonate with silenced voices, by illuminating history and theory, with goals of dialogue, understanding, solidarity, power, and pride at its core. During her years at Skidmore College Maiya exclusively studied the visual arts and its histories. Her independent study in Art Therapy acquainted her with ideologies around the cerebral responses to aesthetic stimuli, as well as emotional associations and cognitive tendencies to attribute meaning and symbolism. In her current work Maiya is trying to “relax” in concept and focus on exploring the therapeutic outcomes of balancing aesthetics. This perspective aligns with the spirit of Painting with a Twist because it leads Maiya to see the uniqueness of each person’s painting and the individual mastery that can be achieved within it. There is a true beauty to seeing the vast differences in paintings that come out of our classes, and that is what it is so amazing about the experience! Try something new, be inspired by a painting community, and spark the creativity inside you.
