Our Artists

Kat Powell

Kat Powell

Kat Powell was born and raised right here in Lubbock, Tx. She received a BFA degree in Studio Art with an emphasis in Drawing/Painting, from Texas Tech University. (Kat is an amazing sketch artist, and if you sign up for our Paint Your Pet sessions, it’s highly likely that she is the one who has sketched your pet for painting!) She has 3 fur-babies of her own, all cats. Kat has been with Painting with a Twist in Lubbock since its birth in 2010. She works as both a Stage and Floor Artist, now mostly on the weekends. She has been busy illustrating several children’s books, creating logo designs for clients, and commissioned artwork. Occasionally you’ll see her out at the FFAT, and Open Houses. She likes to doodle a lot in her spare time! Kat likes to study new forms of art, such as sculptures, sewing, and jewelry making. Kat also loves learning obscure facts about anatomy and history. The weirder the fact the better! Kat will tell you she is an introvert, and very socially awkward, but found that art was the easiest way for her to interact with people. Whether teaching at PWAT or doing a show at a gallery, art has given her the chance to actually connect with people. Her favorite thing about being an instructor at PWAT is she loves that people come and gain a new love and appreciation for art! Her approach to helping them do this? She says the “Bob Ross Technique” always works…Happy little trees for everyone!
Cas Blake

Cas Blake

Cas has been an artist at PWAT since September 2016. She attends South Plains College and will soon graduate and move on the Texas Tech to major in Interior Design. She is married, and has a cat named Mishka. Cas loves her family, painting, and has a passion for all things aquatic/oceanic and beaches. She loves seeing the guests enjoying themselves in the classes and seeing their art masterpieces come to life!
Julie Kelly

Julie Kelly

Since 1970, Julie has called Plainview, Texas home. She has been married for 28 years, and has 3 grown children, and 4 dogs. She has been a licensed Cosmetologist for 35 years, and works Full-Time as a Warrants Clerk for the Hale County Sheriff’s Office, where she has been for the last 24 years. She is also currently the Chairwoman of the 911 Advisory Board for South Plains Association of Governments. Julie enjoys country music and loves going to concerts! Since 2016, Julie works as a Floor Artist at Painting with a Twist on weekends. She started out as a customer, grew to love what we do, and wanted to be a part of it. She likes being the Floor Artist so she can intermingle with the guests and help them when they need it. Julie likes being hands on, but in the background. She says it’s like when she’s dispatching 911 calls…..the voice behind the scenes! Although, she did step out into the spotlight in 2016 and led an art project with members of a local Relay for Life team. Julie believes in having a positive attitude, smiles, encouragement and just having lots of fun!
Taylor Russell

Taylor Russell

Taylor moved to Lubbock from the Dallas/Fort Worth area in the fall of 2016 and is currently studying Art and Portuguese at Texas Tech. She realized art was her desired career when she switched from a pre-med degree. Taylor has taken watercolor courses under top UNT professors as well. She started working at PWAT in September 2017 as an instructor, and loves seeing the guests, who come to paint, gain their confidence in their untapped art abilities. Everyone has a different learning style and pace, and she tries her best to relate to each while teaching. She attends the First Friday Art Trail, and Texas Tech Art Gallery events. At age 5, Taylor was put in art lessons and continued to compete in local competitions and events such as the Fort Worth Stock show. Taylor has a Great Pyrenees named Rolls. Her hobbies include gardening and make-up artistry.
Kyle Collins

Kyle Collins

Kyle is originally from Baird, Tx. He graduated from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, with a BFA in Photography. He belonged to the Big Country Art Association, and worked in the Painting with a Twist studio in Abilene while going to school. Kyle moved to Lubbock in September 2017 and started working with us as an Instructor/artist. He loves to paint and combine that with photography. He also paints using encaustics, which for us non-artsy people, that is painting with wax! Kyle says he began finger-painting at the young age of 1 year and not much of his technique has changed. His favorite thing about being an instructor at PWAT is getting to have daily “paint parties”, and teaching people that YES, you can paint! He wants our guests to always be relaxed and calm. take deep breaths, and don’t be stressed while painting. (He agrees that sips of wine helps with that relaxation as well). In his spare time, Kyle loves to read a good book, and always loves to go exploring in nature. He hopes you will join his classes, and have some paint fun!
